I have installed an alarm system in my home and the control panel is located in the basement. There is no jack in the basement and there is no jack nearby to extend to connect to the alarm. What I did was I went to the Network interface box and ran the wire off the outside terminals. See the links for pictures. I have no telephone experience so is this OK to do even though another wire(my main house line) is run off the same terminal? These are not separate phone lines they both have the same number.

I do get a dial tone when both are connected but the alarm jack is static once you pick it up but then immediately stops and i hear a dial tone with a few quiet beeps once in a while.

thank you.

The red and green wires on the bottom go to the alarm, the ones on the top go the the house jacks.

This is the whole phone setup:

Alarm jacks are usually RJ-31 and are wired directly to the network interface and inside wiring in a manner that when the alarm dials out it first disconnects all other telephones on the premises. This is done so that the alarm dialer cannot be disabled by merely having a telephone "off hook". Not knowing how all your other inside telephone wiring is done I cannot offer any suggestions as to why you may be experiencing the problems you related.

it should come from the nid , to the rj31x then our of the rj31x back to the nid where it feeds all your phones

so red green to the alarm jack
black yellow back , spliced to red green to the phones
