Hello DIY forum!
I am in the process of building a fence and gate in my backyard to accommodate my RV which is 24' long and 8' wide.
I'm stuck on what kind of gate to build and would like some feedback on what kind to build. I've read through a bunch of threads here on this topic but I'm not sure which is best for my yard. I have attached a couple of pictures to help show what I'm talking about. I want a 11' wide gate and I'm thinking a double gate might be the way to go in my case.
<a href="http://s362.photobucket.com/albums/oo65/byrdmanbyrd/?action=view&current=RVgate2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo65/byrdmanbyrd/RVgate2.jpg" border="0" alt="RVgate 2"></a>
If I go with a double gate should I use steel posts to hold the gate and do I need to pour a concrete footer to connect the two posts that will be holding the gate?
<a href="http://s362.photobucket.com/albums/oo65/byrdmanbyrd/?action=view&current=RVgate.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i362.photobucket.com/albums/oo65/byrdmanbyrd/RVgate.jpg" border="0" alt="RVgate 1"></a>
As you can see in the picture there is a slight slope that I have to deal with but other than that the ground is ok.
The red line is where the fence is going and the yellow lines are where I want the gate.
I'm thinking double gate but if you guys think a sliding/rolling gate is best let me know.

Thanks,
Chris

RVgate,

Welcome to the forums.

I'll tell you how I did my drive and dbl. gates that have an 11' opening as it relates to your project.

Get rid of the grass and about 5" of dirt in the area where the RV will be parked.

Footings for the gate posts -- mine are 18" diam. and 30" deep, with steel posts (1-7/8" X 8'). I filled the bottom 24" when setting the posts. I would also set a 4" steel post by that gas meter so it can't get run into!!

Base and concrete the driveway from your existing driveway back to about 2' or 3' from the fence.

I used 12"X6"X12" slump column blocks to form my gate posts, setting the bottom and top hinge hardware as I built them, and then filled them with concrete. Fill the 4" steel post at the gas meter with concrete while you're at it, then paint it bright yellow, flourescent orange, hot pink or something so you can see it.

For the gates themselves, I used steel frames (1-5/8" chain link tubing). I attached vinyl panels to each gate. Advantages are that the hardware is so readily available -- chain link for the hinges and a HD latch for vinyl gates, and a couple of cane bolts. Plus the panels are very light weight, putting very little strain on the posts.
