I have an end table I want to have a piano type finish but don't want to spend the $175.00 to do it. If I paint the table black would I finish the piece with varnish, lacquer or shellac? Can I wax the piece regardless of type I use?

Wax can be applied over varnish, polyurethane or lacquer.

$175 for a "piano" finish is a fair price - frankly, it's lower than what I would charge!

The most important thing is to get the substrate dead smooth. ANY imperfections will stand out like a neon sign in the finish coat.

The final finish needs to be 'water clear', that is as clear as water. Oil base finishes and most readily available lacquers are amber in color. Using these will affect the final color.

You can use black paint for the color. I would suggest an aerosol for ease of application.
