I have an end table I want to have a piano type finish but don't want to spend the $175.00 to do it. If I paint the table black would I finish the piece with varnish, lacquer or shellac? Can I wax the piece regardless of type I use?

should be fine to wax it. Just never expect to be able to easily re-finish it. And remember, the wax attracts dust so the more you do it the more often in the future you will have to.
