Is there a way to remove the grey stains caused by bare timber being exposed to the weather? I am reviving the timber look outside and the stains spoil the effect.

There are a number of products available to restore the new look to redwood decks. I used one a few years ago with reasonable success. I was able to clean up our redwood deck well enough to seal it, but chose to use an opaque stain for more durability. Get a small bottle of one of these products and try it on your project to see if it is strong enough. If you have access to a pressure washer, the affect would be dramatically increased. Log and timber frame house builders use a special solution to clean up the logs and beams after the construction phase and before the finishing phase. I don't know offhand what that solution is, but could probably find out for you if the first suggestion doesn't get it.
Let me know.
