It is under a cover on the left or port side. The cover has 2 round portrusions (sp?)held on by 4 bolts. I think this is correct if you list your ser# I can look it up for sure. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but it's been a crazy week.

I don't have my merc software at home but this is in your ser# range. It shows a thermostat referance # 37 but no popit valve.

So I would run the motor on a hose with the thermostat cover off to see if you have good water flow. If you do put your thermostat in a cup of hot water with a thermometer. the opening temp should be stamped on the stat.

If that all seams good I would check the gasket under the water pump and arround the housing. It's rare but I have seen a bad gasket will pump fine when under water but once the boat is on plane that part of the gearcase is out of the water and will suck air.

If I have time at work I will look up your ser# to be sure.
