I need everyone's help on this. Our septic tanks are within 15 feet of our front porch and the concrete lids stick out like sore thumbs - along with the . I want to put in a garden bed in that area while leaving the lids uncovered for eventual pumping. I'm thinking a bit of top soil, some perennials and a few annuals, and some mulch. Maybe cover the lids with some mulch or plant pots.

My wife hates how it looks, but doesn't want to put anything in that area. She argues we might have to dig there someday. I argue that that is most unlikely - the only thing we'd ever likely be doing there is removing the lids for pumping.

This area is ugly as sin - please tell me it's okay to put in a bed there to hide this mess. She doesn't trust my assessment on this - go figure.....

Well I wouldn't put anything you can't easily remove on the lids.Potted plants ect.As for "you might have to dig there" unless you plant something with deep or significant root systems what difference does it make?Things like flowers etc are easy enough to replace/redo if you ever have to dig up the septic tank.

Another possible idea is to use potted plants only and set them around so they block the view of the lids.

Cover the lids. However, measure from 2 fixed points to the lids to establish their location before you cover them. Write down the measurements and put in a safe place for future reference. This will minimize the amount of digging needed to find the lids in the future.

plastic rocks. that way if you have to move it, you can do so easily.

We have one of those concrete columns poking out of the ground about 20" high, but it's not our septic tank...smells though

Our tank is actually in the ground and we have a flush lid, last house we had to dig up the grass to access the lid.

Make sure it's actually the tank, if it's been pumped then you know but generally that's the access to the septic pump or leach field pump.
