Patching and Plastering - Interior Block Wall - Plaster or Drywall Mud

I want, need to cover a cinder block wall inside .
Want to give it a new look .
Plaster or drywall mud it ?
I read that plaster is quick setting and not nearly as easy as drywall mud to use.

Any light to be shed on this project .

Drywall mud can be applied thick ?
Or does it have to applied a little at a time to get thickness ?

What is on the block now? paint? raw block?

Joint compound will crack as it dries [shrinks] if it's applied to thick. Since I don't have any experience working with plaster I usually use a setting compound like durabond - it dries hard so you want to apply it in a manner that requires no/little sanding. I'll often top coat with j/c because it sands easy.

Exterior block is normally stucco'd with a mortar/stucco mix. I don't know if this would be the correct method for the interior. One of our plaster pros should be by later with some good advice:thumbup:

It's a passive solar home , dirt up as much a 4 feet on some sides , looks like cement over block , real cinder block , looks ugly , want to smooth it out for a cleaner look .

Do you have any sign of moisture coming in from outside? How is the outside below the grade waterproofed?
