Hi I've asked a couple local overhead door places about this and no one knows. Hopefully these things exist if not I may have a good idea on my hands.

I recently purchased a garage door with a pass-through door in it. The set up works great but I'm worried about safety.

I'd like 2 things. I'd like a sensor that prevents the garage door from opening if the pass-through door is open.
I'd also like to add a delay to the motor and an alarm so that someone who may be in the garage ready to open the pass-through door knows that the overhead door will open soon.

Any suggestions?
I may be able to use the safety sensor's wiring to do the pass-through door open sensor, but the delay and alarm I'm not so sure I can do.
Thanks in advance
-Sean

As for the pass through door, depending on what kind of opener it is it you maybe able to wire a proximity switch on the door in series with the push button, So if the door is open the button won't work, that will not prevent any remotes from working though. What kind of opener is it ? commercial or residential?
As for the alarm not sure, I do know liftmaster has one on their gate operator, but I believe it is all integrated into the circuit board that controls it.

Unfortunately we'll be doing 99% opening the garage door with the remote so I'll need to figure something else out like wiring the walkthrough door sensor to the safety sensor, but in reverse.
The motor is a pretty cheap craftsman for residential...not sure the model though.

The door sensors will not help you because they will not prevent the door from opening. They might as well be in Hong Kong unless the door is closing. There is an easy solution for the warning that the door is about to open but it would involve the person with the remote keying an additional button. Sears and Liftmaster sell an accessory that will turn on a light inside the house with the remote. You could rig this up to ring a doorbell. You must get the model designed for your particular model opener. A relay connected to the pass-through door could cut off the power to the opener.

Well...If you felt like ditching the remote(s) you got with the opener...you could get one of the universal wireless replacement kits. The kind with the new receiver box that mounts on the ceiling and wires to the same terminals as the inside button. Then you would have to figure out how to break the wires from the box to the opener. Since the door is moving it can't be hardwired easily and safely.

Just wondering...does the pass thru open in or out? If in, there wouldn't really be a damage issue if the door was opened while the pass thru was. Also..is this a person sized door..or just for tools and parts...don't think I've seen any, other than for small people.

How bout a big sign that says " Honk horn 3 times and wait 10 sec before opening door"?

Thanks for the tip on the universal wireless entry. That might work out well.
I may just have a motion alarm placed in the driveway to alert someone in the garage. I'd still like a delay though, but guess I'll have to be careful.
The door opens out as that is the only way they said they could do it. If it opened in then this wouldn't be much of an issue, but I guess someone still could be opening the walkthrough door and go to step out at the same time we pull in the driveway to open the garage. Though that is unlikely.
The universal wireless entry may allow me to cut the line so that when the door is open the wireless won't work. Thanks again for the tip.
Would have been better if the door came with a safety feature. Maybe something I can sell to the walkthrough door company :)

Good ideas too. The relay connected to the power is the way I've been thinking of going as it seems pretty simple. I do have a light in the opener that can turn on with a remote, but not the remote i have. Not a bad idea either. Thanks!

You could also put an automatic closer on the pass through door so it always closes on it's own, every overhead door I've done with a pass door built into it has an automatic closer on it.
