Please help -- I am desperate!

I bought a terrific sofa (and 2 matching chairs) on eBay but cannot get the sofa into my house!

The door and entryway do not allow it to come in and turn around. (2 movers helped me and we tried and tried.) The windows to the house are double glazed and very expensive to remove and reinstall (£200+, which is over $300 USD), so I am trying to figure out how to dismantle the sofa in some way, get it in, and put it back together.

The covering is textile, and if there is a cut or seam in the back when I am done, I don't care -- it will go against a wall anyway.

Can the back and arms be "cut" away and then put back on somehow, once the parts are all brought into the living room?

I am at a loss, and so frustrated and upset.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.. especially if it is really soon, since the sofa is sitting in the garage. (I have access to the house already, although I do not move in formally till next week.)

THANKS!
Debb :)

Welcome to the forums! How wide is the door? Can you take the door off the hinges to gain an extra inch or so? Are you turning the sofa on its side? I am sure all the regular tricks are being used if you have professional movers helping. Does it have legs? Can they be removed? Do you have a larger or more accessible back door?

yes, door was removed from its hinges, the legs removed too (only 2" or so, but still something) -- the sofa is a 3-seater and longer than the doorway is tall; narrow door to boot, as most doors in the UK seem to be, when compared to American homes.

Back door cannot even come off hinges, given how it was installed. :(

Trouble is, as you enter the main door, the stairway is about 24-30 inches dead ahead, with the stairwell walls right there, and a door way on either side of the entry too. So no place to maneuver the sofa to rearrange it so you can re-orient it and move it on. Once partway up the stairs, inside the front the door, there is no space to move it around so it can be turned to get into the living room.

Sadly, it seems the only option will be to somehow remove the back and arms of the sofa (it is all upholstered, and a more modern style, so no simple wooden arms to remove), or else go in through the front (bay) double glazed window.

I am hoping the sofa can somehow come apart easily enough. SIGH

Thanks,
Debb

Debb, most likely each piece is covered and then put together. Can you post a couple of pics of the top, sides and underside on a site such as photobucket.com and copy/paste the HTML code to your reply post. Maybe we can work through it without a chainsaw.

hi, never heard of photobucket.com -- I'll have to take a look.. but tomorrow, as it's about 10 pm here and I am quite tired (got up at 4 am for some stupid reason I guess. LOL)

Will also have to dash over to the garage where the sofa is at present (awaiting its move into the house, hopefully!)

I also use MSN and Yahoo messengers, where I know how to easily send pics/files. :) But I'll get some extra photos tomorrow and look at photobucket.

Thanks!!
Have a great evening,

hi again.. as tired as I am, you piqued my interest, so I had to go look at that website.

I hope this URL takes you to the pics:

These are the initial pics I took yesterday, but not sure they are clear enough. Will take more tomorrow.

thanks again,
Debb :)

Debb. That's it. Now, all we need is one or two from underneath. That way we can see how it is held together. Thanks for the smile.
