We moved into a house with brand marathon sod in April 09. It had been laid in Nov/Dec 08. The previous owners never cut it while we were in escrow (for 60 days!) and it was almost 2 feet tall when we got possesion of the house. They thought they were kind and had a gardener come in to cut it for us, but they cut it all the way down to regular length, and soon there after it began to die.
We have tried more water, less water, some fertilizer, and noting is working. We have played with the sprinklers, and there is plenty of coverage. Our soil is great. Our flowers and plants are doing fantastically.
I just looked at the Marathon site (which I probably should have done MONTHS ago) and it says to water at a different time than we had been, and to fertilize/reseed, but not to do it during July and August. Do we really have to wait until September to try to get this under control? Any advice? We went from the best lawn in the neighborhood to the worst!

Call a lawn service. They're going to be familiar with the different grasses and conditions in your area and how to handle them.

I think having a lawn service for the first year or two as a homeowner is a good idea - talk to them and learn from them and then you'll be able to take over without them.
