I have done some homework checked my wiring i have the installers code went to *190 set it to 1 then 0 even tried 2 then 0 my main keypad is the 5160 that came with the system the 5150 that I am trying to add is from my previously installed system that the adt guy advised to hold on to in case I wanted a second keypad. both the book and the installer said this keypad were compatible . i tried unhooking the first keypad to set option 190 to (ON) with the newly added keypad i looked for a dip switch to set the keypad id to 17 with no luck. but no matter what i do when i power up either keypad together they freeze and don't allow any function . I understand that I am basically stumped and am missing the obvious . but the installer manual is vague at best. any help would be greatly appreciated

when you power up the keypad press 1 & 3 at same time then you will put 17 then ** try this if no luck do 1 & 3 thing on the 1ST kp and see what no. it may be 17 so you may need to
go in to programing *191 set it to 1 then 0 *99 out and set the new kp to 18 with the 1 & 3 thing give it a shot :D

ok my first keypad is in fact set to 16 and the one i am trying to set said 00 so i pressed 17 and it then blinked back and forth ca then 17 with no way to get it to stop (**) so i walked away thinking it would miraculously fix itself it did in fact go back to the regular screen . keep in mind it is the only keypad hooked up since the two of them on at the same time freezes them . so when i went back to check if the address stuck (1 & 3) and now it flashes de then - and i tried to enter 17 and it only accepts a value of like 1 through 4 . so some how i set off a fire alarm and adt called . boy that was fast, and loud so how do i go from here? oh and by the way i cleared the fire alarm.

First of all, when tinkering, especially when you are not sure of procedures, _unplug the alarm from the phone lines!_
Next, verify your keypad model, it sounds like you may have a 6150RF or 6160RF which have a diffferent setup routine than the standard keypad model.
Using your original keypad, turn on address 17:
[installer code] + 8 + 00
*190 1 0
*99
If you have a standard (non-RF model) keypad, now connect the new keypad. Within 60 seconds press 1 + 3
The current keypad address is displayed
press 00
enter the new keypad address (17)
Press * until you exit keypad setup.
_If you have a RF model keypad_ the setup is _different_.
You need the manual if you don't have one:

FC is failure to communicate. If you are done tinkering, plug the phone line back in.
If you are not actually being monitored by ADT, go into programming and enter *41*, *42* and *94* to delete the dialer phone numbers and turn off the communicator.
This panel is a modified Vista 20p. Websearch using the phrase "Vista 20p installer manual".

It won't clear until a successful communication is sent. Call them, put your account on test for an hour or so, send a couple of alarms or panics.

I will do that thanks for all your help. there are a couple of things i am curious about... i saw a thread on controlling your garage door but didnt understand how or why. and how do you name your zones or is it even possible on my system?;)

A 6160 keypad will display zone descriptors (programmed using the *82 menu mode). The 6150 is a fixed english keypad, what you see is what you get.
The garage door trick has to do with using output programming to trigger a relay. The specifics depend on what external connections your garage door opener supports.
