this humongous beetle-like think was sauntering across my (finished) basement floor. I swept it up and threw it far from the house. I briefly considered plopping in my hydrangeas in the hope it would eat aphids, but I feared it might eat hydrangeas!

Is it totally black, or does it have a greenish tint? If so, the leg configuration looks like Japanese beetle. Devastating to leaves on fruit.
