Not sure if this is technically the right forum for this question, but since the task is part of my whole house trim replacement/staining project I'll go ahead and ask it.

I've recently replaced the casing around my front doors with stained oak. My doors are steel, just painted white right now. The wife wants to paint them something other than white, but I personally don't care for painted doors surrounded by stained wood (on the inside of the house anyways).

I've seen kits at stores where you can do a faux woodgrain paint job on steel doors. The pictures on the box look very good, but I'm wondering how well the average joe could do on his own door. I'm looking for any opinions or experience - good or bad.

And yes, I'd love to replace them with wood doors or even fiberglass ones that are "pre-stained", but I don't have that much money.

You'll be workin hard to try and match your trim...real hard. Personally I always like the contrast of paint and stain...but thats just me.

You might be able to find a faux panter to do it...but it still wouldn't be perfect..and wouldn't be cheap.

Oh..just noticed...yer wife wants paint? Why are you asking us? How long you been married anyway? Slow learner? LOL J/K!!

I agree. It would be tough to match it well. They make it look so easy on the package, but I'm sure it's not.

I didn't mean that my wife wants to paint it and I don't. She wants it painted something other than white. And because I'll be the one doing it, I wanted to at least explore my options first. Futile though they may be. ; )
