Hey all! I have just moved into a small rental house that has an old GE Gas Furnace. When it kicks on, there is a very loud click coming from a relay that is near the front of the furnace. The unit is located in my kitchen and is behind a folding metal door, so the click can be heard loudly throughout the house.

Would it be dangerous to enclose the relay in some kind of box made out of insulating material to dampen the sound of the loud click when the unit kicks on?

It will overheat.

Thanks for the reply, daddyjohn. I definitely don't want it to overheat.

The loud click happens even when I turn the fan manually to "on". It's coming from a relay (is this also called a contactor?) that was made by Honeywell.

Are some of these relays more quiet than others? Maybe I could replace it with something that has worked well for others.
It will overheat.

It's the blower fan relay and yes a newer one would probably be quieter. Does it have a number on it like R8xxxxxx?
