I read the 'sticky' but want to make sure I haven't gotten into anything I shouldn't have. I am removing sheet vinyl (or linoleum - I don't know the difference). The house was built in the 50's, but I don't know when the flooring was installed. The linoleum/vinyl is pulling up without much effort, tearing into sections at times. What is has left behind is a white or grey paper substance on the floor which is very difficult to remove.

Based on this information, is there a chance of asbestos or does it sound safe? I am asking for everyone's safety, especially my wife and child, and figured this would be a good place to go. Any responses would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Anything possible. I have seen asbestos in very odd materials like ceiling texture or strange places like not the flooring but it is in the glue. If you are worried about it then take a sample an have it tested.
