i have recently moved into a flat and there is a phone line coming in but no master box on the wall. in work a bt engineer gave me a NTE5 box when i explained that bt themselves wanted to charge £155 to resolve the issue.
I've wired the odd box or two before but here i have a problem. the cable comes straight from the telegraph pole to the flat, it is black in colour, with seven wires contained inside. the wires are as follows, 3 yellow, 1 black,1 green, 1 white, 1 orange. i cant match any colour coding as most say about a red wire, can anyone tell me how to wire the box up

This is primarily a North American board. I'm not sure how long before someone with Brit Telco knowledge shows up.

That said I will pass on a bit of general knowledge. In the US you need two wires for service. My way of sorting out multiple pairs is to use an improvised test phone. I fasten a couple of short wires with clips to a phone jack, plug in a phone, then just try all the wires systematically till I get a dial tone.

You may find this document interesting:

The colorcodes are more difficult, but only 2 wires are interesting. Thay should be matched in pairs, yellow +....
When you find those two who gives you the dial tone. (you may just test by holding te lines to the plug of a headset.) DO NOT put the headset directly to your ear, the sound MAY be load!

When the 2 are located, just connect them to terminal 2 and 5,
(It may be only those with terminals in) The system will work fine even with switched polarity, but if you have a voltmeter you could use that instead of the headset, and the + to 5 (probably yellow), and the other to 2.
5 may be called A (equals US: Ring)
2 may be called B (equals US: Tip)

Good luck.
