If I double sock the end of a tall ladder to change a chandelier and have the ladder supported almost upright, will it damage the sheetrock ceiling?

I think you already know that is a good idea. You want protection, yet something not as likely to allow you to slide across ceiling and either damage texture or cause the paint (especially if it is flat), to become shinier. Flat paint becomes shiny when rubbed.

I did that once ...never again...even with someone holding the ladder. Extension ladders aren't designed to be straight upright. I"m not afraid of heights, but I constantly felt like I was loosing my balance and ready to fall. I'll go rent a 16-20 ft step ladder next time.

There must be some way they work on cathedral ceilings without building staging.
My ceiling is 15' high so it would take a ladder about that size to work on it -perhaps a 12 footer.
Will call around for prices/rentals.
