We have a mid wall wood fireplace (after 18" off the floor) that we are coverting to a gas insert. There was a brick hearth in front of it which I have now removed, but below it is a what looks like a large concrete slab on which it sat on. My question is, what is this for and can it be removed so I can continue the hardware floors from the rest of the floor on it?

I should mention the fireplace is on our main floor and there is a full basement below it that also has a fireplace in the same location.
