Have a B&S engine on a Craftsman Lawn Tractor. The starter magnets came loose in starter so I purchased another starter now this starter worked for 2 weeks now it is not working. Turns freely but when power applied it turns 16th of an inch then nothing. it will continue this after I spin it by hand. What could be causing these starters to go bad or is it just bad luck on starters. model #917.274841 eng#31P777 0348E1

Load test the battery... It may be dead... Don't check it with a voltmeter as that only shows the surface charge on it.. A load test tests it under operating conditions.. Put on a charger first & if you don't have a tester,, any local garage can do it for you.... The engine does turn by hand, Right???? Roger

Tks Roger... New battery and turns freely.. just talked to a lg tech and he comfirmed what I thought.. compression release on cam is worn. He has run into this on the 18.5 Briggs often..
