My brother has an approximate 6 year old GE space saver washer dryer in one unit (over/under type) that once it finishes the wash cycle it will not drain the water out for the spin cycle. He says he "thinks" he can hear some motor activity in the form of a faint hum, but no pumping. He says if he manually presses in a switch (I'm assuming it's the door switch) the tub will begin to slowly spin (full of water of course) but will not pump out the water.

Is there a switch or sensor that could be bad or maybe a wire shaken loose in the control panel etc.? Perhaps some small "thing" has jammed up an impeller or something?? If so, how would you access it?

Obviously we're looking for some basic DIY troubleshooting-101advice before calling in the guns and spending money, only to have it turn out to be something a do-it-yourselfer could've done with a few basic processes of elimination steps. He said it was working perfectly with no issues up until this one particular load cycle.

Can you post the model #? Some units have a separate water pump and sometimes something [sock, bra underwire, etc.] will get caught in the pump.

GE space saver usually made by Frigidaire and have a seperate motor driven pump. Look for something in pump or the impeller broken.

I showed my brother the posts suggesting a clogged pump or impeller, and he suddenly remembered finding a pair of his reading glasses in the washer with a missing arm yet thought nothing of it at the time. Well that got him thinking and sure enough he was able to fish out the eye glass arm and voila! 10 minutes later it was back in action.

He said to pass along his gratitude and said this forum is a great resource to have and will be signing up and visiting frequently. He will also recommend it to his friends.

I know it wasn't a complicated fix, but it sure saved him what would have been an embarrassing waste of money.

Thanks for the feedback. Many folks search here and find a solution without ever posting, so all feedback really helps.

Yesterday, of all things, I, myself, had to remove the agitator on a Hotpoint, to get out a bikini, with strings wrapped around the shaft, up and over this sort of knucle. In a couple days I will also be replacing the pump on this leaking unit which is affecting the clutch directly beneath it.
