I have a yellow jacket nest in the ground in a mulch bed along the front of my porch. The entrance hold is approx. 1-2” in front of the brick so it is fairly tight to the house and not real easy to access.

I have two young children so I need to get rid of this nest. I’m a little concern about toxic chemicals in this area because of the children but ultimately I need to kill off the nest.

What are my options to kill off this nest? How do I do it without getting stung?

This is the 3rd nest I’ve had in this area (within 30’) in the past 12 months. I let one die out in the fall and the other I hired an exterminator as it was in the wall. Is there anything I can do to keep them away or is something attracting them to my house? Do they nest in groups?

Thank you!

They are drawn to the relative ease of nesting in areas like mulch and where there are gaps or holes and mulch often has that in it.They do not nest as groups. There isn't much you can do to prevent them except a lot of spraying which isn't good around kids and minimally effective.A granular insecticide spread over the mulch bed might help prevent it but like any product has some risk especially in a wet or damp state.

An old standby way to get ground yellow jackets if you can access the hole is go there after dark when they go back into the nest and become somewhat dormant, these days that's like 9:30/10 at night.Take an average household size bucket, buy a bottle of liquid sevin concentrate, pour around half in the bucket and fill with water,Pour the whole thing down the hole. You must kill the queen and flooding the nest with this mix should do that.

Areosols and such do not work as they will not penetrate.although insecticide isn't a nice thing,a common alternative, gasoline,is far worse.

There goes my suggestion....rats. Don't forget yellow jacket nests have two holes. One is an emergency type exit for them.
I'll let you know how my dad did it if you promise not to do it. He put about 3 oz of gasoline in a wine bottle, jammed it in the first hole, waited until the yellow jackets started to emerge from the other hole, then threw a match at them. Wow, fireworks in August. Now, this was 50 years ago, so things have changed drastically. The sevin liquid is probably the best least invasive and safest way of doing it, and as Spdavid said, you must get the queen or all is lost.
Good luck with the eradication and please be safe and don't do what my dad did!
