I recently found 3 inch diameter holes in my backyard and am trying to figure out whether its a gopher or snake or any other critter causing this damage. There are several holes in one particular area (abouth 12x12ft) of the ground and the holes are usually covered back up with soil.

Does anyone have pictures of what gopher holes look like or how to identify the type of critter causing this damage?

Should I be concerned about snakes? I live in San Francisco in a relatively cooler part of town.
