I found an abandoned ferel kitten in some old barn ruins I was cleaning up. It was emaciated and dehydrated. After a week, my vet friend could tell it was a male and about 8 weeks old. Well, It's been a week and 2 days and today, he ventured down a register and is now down into the furnace area. The furnace is a Goodman 96% efficient, about 3-4 years old and I cannot get the duct work apart from the furnace and I believe the kitten has fallen down into the furnace area and is too frightened to make a noise. How do I get to it to get it out!! I have tried to pry the ductwork off the big area above the furnace itself to no avail, it's jammed into a tiny space and is only about 3.5' long to where it goes up into the room.

OMG, how awful! Can you call your heating company? Seems this would be an emergency. Where I live, the firemen would come out, or how about your local SPCA? These days, everyone wants to help in these situations.
Hopefully, someone on here knows what to do and can help, in the meantime.

In the area where you change your air filter there should be fan assembly. usually a couple of screws and that assembly slides out for cleaning. With the fan out, and the filter removed, the little fella might be able to walk out. A little tuna might help.
Beyond that one of the furnace guys will have to take over.
Also, make sure you have the emergency power switch for the furnace turned off.
Good Luck

Thank you. He's still in there at 9pm. I did close everything off with 2 exceptions. He is in the hot air duct work, no idea which tube (area of the house he is in) so I removed one end of the main hot air duct where all the tubes run off of. He can jump down 10 inches to a shelving unit, or across 10 inches to a window sill OR, he can go to the other end and jump down into where the heat exchangers are there is a ledge and he can jump down into the basement from there. I set to animal traps with cat food and hopefully, I will have this guy out of there in the am! I was able to clean up one poop he left on top of one of the heat exchangers. BC he's not eating, he may not poop again till he's out of there, but, if he does -- is there a way for a furnace guy to clean the duct work somehow for me??? AARGH!

If its only a few feet down..push a towel down for him to try and climb up.
Why did you have the vent covers off in the first place?

OK! The little guy came out - YEA! The room with the register off is my puter room and I was sitting here last night when I heard him. He was on top of a suitcase under the dresser. So, I'm not sure exactly when he came out but it could have been right away when it all started and I didn't see him up there. He's a feral kitten and way undersized. Thanks everyone.
