Well, I know it's not due to radiation - and they're fine to eat.
For about a third of my crop, this year and last, the carrot stalk is normal for about the top half. Then, the carrot grows separate roots, maybe two to four, that are sort of siamese.
Is this common? What causes this?

Doug, carrots are very difficult to grow in anything but loamy soil. We grow them, but in the Georgia soil, they are stumped at best. If you can keep the soil around them worked well, you should have single, longer fruit. BUT, they could have been from outer space, who knows!

I have grown many mutant carrots. They did not look like cartoon carrots until I specially prepared a raised bed with perfect sifted soil. Compacted earth, a stone or a lump of clay can cause them to grow wonkey. A soft, uniform soil is required to get pretty carrots. Don't worry, even the ugly ones are tasty.
