Ok this is going to be a really newb type of questin so brace yourself ;p
I've just moved into a new place, my first own place so I'm in the process of doing it up.
I want to add some wall lights as it does not have any
How do I go about it with regards to electricity and wiring...is it easy? I don't want to overdo it and have to do a lot of drilling holes etc...something simple to hang some wall lights
Any thoughts?

It can be done but it will take someone with experience or some willing to learn and possibility make mistakes.
What you need to do is fish the walls. In order to do that you need to have access to an unfinished basement or an attic (and don't mind wading in insulation.)
I suggest going on line or getting some books and research how to fish walls.
Are you up for the challenge?

your probabaly not allowed to do that on rented apartments right? You are correct. There are issues of civil and criminal liability if something happens even if not directly related to your work plus maybe a POed owner and failure to get your deposit back.

What's the best way around it then if you are in a rented apartment but want some wall lights? Some kind of wireless lighting system maybe?

They aren't the fanciest, but some swag lamps can be plugged in and hung where you need them. Either that or some floor lamps with the arms to extend out where you need the light. You'll probably find that you have outlets controlled by wall switches. Its very common for apartments to do that, since they never need to update fixtures.
Try checking some thrift stores..people update all the time and donate their old stuff thats perfectly good.

You could go old school and put some candle sconces or oil lamps on the wall or use theses little LED candles. Battery Operated Candles - Safe Flameless Tea Lights (http://www.batteryoperatedcandles.net/?gclid=CMi-lNLZ0JsCFQoMDQodk2L5KA) That is what a friend of mine did and it gives nice ambiance. Or VERY old school and put a couple torches! :D
