Hello forum,

This forum seems to have some very smart people so I wanted to run a few things by you all.
I just bought a very old house, ie lemon, that has old ductwork in the walls. It's rusty and I thought while all the walls are open, I should try and replace it. I do have fairly new central air system and furnance. Given the extent of work to be done, i thought about doing this myself. My question is, is this a job that a layman can do? Of course i have to do my homework and read up on this stuff. I've never been a homeowner and know nothing about this stuff but 2would love a cheaper way of replacing this junk.
Any thoughts?
Thanks forum!!

Id say go for it. You will have to find a good sheet metal shop in your area.I might have them come out and measure everything up then make it and you can install it.

Absolutely..now is the time. As Airman said and seal all joints with either duct mastic or metal tape.

You could try and do it by just buying all the parts you need, but that might turn out more expensive.

thanks for the help! So what about materials? can i use the flexible coil tubing? Would that be appropriate for this job? and is it cheaper? what about ease of use?:gmorning:

Yes flex is cheaper. Flex can't be used in walls because it will break down over time. I would stick to sheet metal.
