We have a Fridgidaire freezer and it konged out on us. I could here a humming noise every once and awhile which I would believe to be the compressor trying to start. Is it worthwhile to attempt to fix? could it be the start capacitor (I would assume it would have one)? It is a large, about 24 cubic feet, 8 or 9 year old unit.

Is this a freezer or refrigerator/freezer? If only a freezer, chest type or stand up type? The problem could simply be a bad relay on the compressor. Easist way for a DIY to tell is replace the relay and overload.

It is a chest type freezer and it was made in 2001, so 8 year old unit. I pulled the capacitor out, discharged it and used my multimeter with capacitance function and it read what it should. Did not spark when the capacitor drained, so hopefully relay malfunctioned. I could not find the schematic, does anyone know where I could find a schematic so I may be able to test the relay. Is the relay the same as the controller?

Is there a trick to getting the wires off the controller. I tried pulling them out as if they were compression connections but the insulation was just pulling back. I ask this because I looked on a parts site and it showed the controller with no wires so I thought there is a way to get them off without cutting them.

Controller? Do you mean the temperature controller? When you touch the compressor is it hot or cold?

Sorry, Repair Clinic called it a controller but I think it may be the relay that you are referring to. It is connected to the compressor and the capacitor is connected to it. My sister in law has the same freezer (we bought them together) and I want to try her relay to see if mine will run.

That sounds good. It's going to either be the relay or the compressor
