Today my Kenmore dishwasher model 665.17829000 started whining.

It whines when the dishwasher first starts up, and it also whines when I hit the 'drain' button -- whether there is water in there or not.

I started to pull it apart to see if I could figure out what the problem was (I found some paper from jars that had collected in the bottom, and removed that, but it didn't help).

I can't figure out how to remove one piece (picture included).
I have tried rotating it one way or the other to remove it, but it doesn't rotate.
I have tried removing the bolt in the middle of the black piece, but the black piece just spins -- I've tried holding the black rubber piece while unscrewing the middle, but it's too tight.

Also, there is a small hole near the center, just outside the holes that held the cap for this piece on, it goes very deep, i have stuck a screwdriver in it (phillips just fits, regular is too wide) -- it goes down about 3 inches, then stops, but doesn't feel like there is anything for me to screw through that.

Any suggestions appreciated :)

Thanks,
Kem

Which way are you trying to turn the bolt? I suspect that this is a left hand threaded bold. Try turning it clockwise to loosen. Typically screws/bolds on a motor shaft are left hand threaded so that as the motor spins it tends to tighten the screw rather than loosen it.

I tried turning the bolt both directions -- doesn't want to budge.

I'm not even sure that removing the middle black piece would allow me to get underneath the whole thing either though -- is there anyone out there with experience with this particular model?

Thanks :)
