i have a mav5000aww maytag washer. it wont agitate when there are clothes in the washer but will when there is no clothes in it. i checked the belt and it looks fine. i also spun the large center pulley by hand and it turns freely both clockwise and counter-clockwise. this leaves me to think that the gears may be stripped? its not a timer issue becasue it will agitate when there arent any clothes in it and it will try to agitate when there is a load in it it just seems like it doesnt have enough power to turn it. any suggestions??

Sounds like a bad gearcase.

Could it be the plastic agitator splines are stripped? Or by whatever method the agitator is attached to the shaft - that it is somewhat loose? Tight enough to work without load, but shows up under load?
