Hi there,
My lawn mower is a Scotts with a Briggs & Stratton engine. It's 9 years old. It worked fine last week. When I went to start it today, it started but then died within 2 seconds. Can't get it to catch past that. Does this sound like something simple? (PLEASE!!!) The gas is full and the oil is at the right level.
I'm not sure where to start from here. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Change the spark plug. That is often the cause of something like this,is very simple, and probably needs doing no matter what the story ends up being.

I've tried with every tool I have to take the spark plug out. I guess that the last time I had my mower serviced they put the spark plug in to last forever. Guess I'll have to take it back down to the shop to have it fixed.
Darn. I was hoping to be able to do it myself. I sure appreciate the help though spdavid.

Does it have a choke? If so, are you leaving it engaged after starting? That will cause it to die quickly. Does it have a prime button? Are you priming it? Spark plug may work, but if it fires then dies, I'd say it is in the fuel system, or deeper.

OK - It's either the spark plug or the fuel system. Guess I'll have to end up taking it down to the shop to have it looked at. :wall:

Note that spark plugs use more or less specific tools to remove them, either an inexpensive tubular wrench like tool or a specifically designed socket for a socket wrench.Generally not much else will work and fit well.

Mary, there are only three things required to make it run.....air, fuel and a spark. Check out the air filter since all other avenues have been mentioned.
