The pressure gauge on the filter reads more than 45 psi. Thinking the filter was badly clogged, I removed the filter cartridge, but saw no significant drop in pressure. It is still over 40 psi. Jets all seem to be working fine. Someone told me it could be a problem with the heater by pass circuit. If true, how do I go about checking that out, or fixing it? The heater is an old Teledyne Laars.

That depends on your plumbing. Can you describe where the water goes after it leaves the filter and what valves are involved?

Have you checked to make sure your gauge has not gone bad? That being said what did pressure usually run? If you remove your eyes from the returns what is your pressure? It is possible there is a blockage in the heater, how old is old? You may want to remove a bucket and inspect tubes.
