I just noticed that my heat pump is not running.
I checked the circuit breaker, it's fine. I tried turning it off at the disconnect a few times, but that didn't work either. With the power still shut off to the unit, there is still a humming sound.
When I try to spin the blade, it spins freely.
Any ideas on what I should check next?
It's a Carrier 38y 3 ton unit.
Thanks.

Check to see what the voltage is at the outdoor unit, it should be 240 volts. The humming nosie is probably the contactor.

The voltage just before the fuse is 240. There is no voltage after the fuse. How do you tell if one of those fuses are blown? I assumed there would be some physical indicator when I checked it out last night.
I'll pickup some replacement fuses and a contactor today.

Your meter has an ohms function, use it to test the fuses. Take the fuses out of the box to do this. Are these fuses in a disconnect near the unit? Make sure the replacement fuses are dual-element time delay type and not NON fuses.

Yeah, they were the fuses in the disconnect. I just replaced them and everything is working fine.
Thanks for your help. I had it in my head that the fuses were fine because they didn't look any different. I would have been kicking myself if I had an electrician come out to replace a pair of fuses.

Sounds good. Are the fuses tight in the clips? Are the wiring connections in the disconnect tight as well? You used dual-element time delay fuses?
