We got our new countertops and sink installed today. Now I'm getting ready to do the plumbing hookups. I've got a Kenmore 3/4 HP disposal that I want to move from the old sink to the new one.
I removed the disposal from the old sink and removed the snap ring, mounting ring and backup ring from the flange sticking through the bottom of the sink. There's also a fiber gasket around the flange, but the previous owners installed it with some sort of jelly-type adhesive (which is not shown in the install instructions), and I can't get the gasket off without destroying it. I went to Sear's website and found the parts list for my disposal (model 175605810 Kenmore 3/4 hp Food Waste Disposer (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02260581000P?keyword=garbage+disposer)) and the gasket is no longer available and there's no substitute listed.
Is it going to be a big deal not having this fiber gasket installed on the new sink? If so, is this something I can go to Sears or a big box and get a generic replacement?
Thanks.
Mark

I'm not sure what the fiber gasket does other than cushion the underside flange. Every one I have installed has one, so who am I to second guess the manufacturers. I would try to find one at either a big box or plumbing supply house so your install on the new sink will be flawless.

(chandler) is right they are there to cushion the underside of the sink, with enameled sinks there is the possibility of cracking it without the protection. I woudn't worry about finding one, you can make one out of some stiff cardboard, it dosen't have to be perfect, just don't crank the screws to tight, luck. :)
