I have a 2005 whirlpool 220v window unit;waranty only cover motors if its less than a year.anyway when its turned on the motor just hums,I tried to spin the squirrel cage and it came on for less than a minute. The whole thing is inclosed not like the old ones you pull out and everything is right there. so any thoughts? and if its took apart how do you get the squirrel cage off?

does it spin freely when the power is off? or hard to turn? If it spins freely, the problem might be a bad capacitor. If not, look for some oil ports on the motor. Usually the squirrel cages are held on with an allen screw or some kind of clip arrangement.

it spins when off though its tight, when on I cant spin it but a inch; and the clip arrangement is what I have seen in the past but how do you remove it without tearing the whole machine to scrap? :gmorning: Thanks for the reply John

the squirrel cage stays put the motor comes out in the condenser section...pop the condenser blade off and push it towards the condenser coil then the motor un nuts off the seperator wall within the unit.looking down into the squirrel cage there should be an opening to allen key the lock down or niddlenose a clip off.before any removale pop the outside cover and tip the unit and spray WD40 down the shafts both sides of the motor spin it backwards to work the solvent in.
