Hi All,

There is a tree stump in the middle of my front lawn. In planning to landscape next summer I'd like to get rid of it and level out the front. The stump is 15 inch diameter, tree type unknown, cut 2 years ago. I think that grinding it would still leave the roots and undulations that would interfere with a new lawn.

I have a pick, shovel, Sawsall, stubborn streak and muscle. I am just not sure where to start. Anyone have some pointers in digging out a stump?

A stump grinder is the way to go. Grind as wide an area as you need to get all the outlying roots.

I had my stump ground and after I removed the "wood chips" I could grow grass there just fine if I wanted to. You may get more mushrooms if its a high water area for a few years, but that is no big deal to contend with.

If you fill the hole with fresh dirt, should have no problems, however.

Thank you both. Guess I'll get a grinder and content myself with digging up the surface roots.

You could use a sawzall and a whole lot of blades. But cutting that deep in the dirt will probably ruin your sawzall.
