I am getting ready to build a built-in room divider/book case. I am not sure of which specie of wood would be best for the face frame. The unit will be painted, so no need for hard woods, I think. Is Pine OK? Poplar?

Welcome to the forums! Whenever I do face framing on a unit that will be painted I use poplar. Takes paint well and doesn't fuzz. Good luck, and post some pix when you get through.
