I am currently looking to replace two heat pumps in my house. The existing units are 20 years old and one has developed a leak in the coil. The price to repair that one seems to indicate I should consider upgrading in efficiency at the same time.
The units are 2 tons and 2.5 tons respectively, and both air handlers are in the attic. Both units would have resistance heat backup included. Existing power and refrigerant lines would be used (flush lines for new refrigerant). Connect to existing duct work and inspect & repair any ductwork issues. The location is Southeast PA outside Phila.
I have two quotes, they're almost identical varying in total by less than $500.
This seems like a lot of money, my question would be for this area, is this a reasonable price?
--------------------------------------
2 ton TRANE 16 SEER XR15: $5950.
(includes installation
Variable air speed handler: $700
Honeywell Air Filter: $300
2.5 ton TRANE 15.75 SEER XL15: $6350.
(includes installation
Variable air speed handler: $480
Honeywell Air Filter: $300

prices aren't that bad BUTyou should install new linesets and evaluate the ducting.
HVAC Software, HVAC-Calc for Heat Loss, Heat Load Calculations (http://www.hvaccomputer.com/)
it includes duct sizing, $49 well spent.
do you qualify for the tax credits?

I've done some looking, and I haven't found any other quotes that would change my mind so far, this guy comes with some good recommendations from people I know.
I don't know why I wouldn't qualify for the tax credit, I thought anyone that installed a system that met the requirements could get the credit.

Yep, the equipment is qualified for the tax credits.
That makes more sense, I couldn't figure out why I wouldn't qualify! ;)
