I have a GE model# GXSF39E01 water softner. I also have hard well water with high iron content. I use softner salt with iron out in it. My problem is after regeneration, my water comes out with a grayish color and smells like rotten eggs. After I run the water for a few minutes it pretty much goes away. Is it a softner problem or do I nee more treatment. My softner setting is at 4.

When you say your softener is set at 4, do you mean the hardness setting? I would think it should be up. You may want to have your water tested for hardness and iron. For every 1 ppm iron, raise hardness up 3 gpg. I don't think the unit is set up high enough.
