Can the same type of stain used for composite doors to have a faux wood grain be used for plastic ?
will it adhere to plastic the same ?

It can be used but it can be tricky. The plastic isn't porous so it doesn't stain well. One trick is to take a small amount of varnish/poly and add some of the pigment from the bottom of the stain can [after it's settled], mix together and then paint just the plastic with it.
