How can I adjust the valves on my B&S L-Head engine....14 HP...Model 400704, Type 1222-01. Thanks for your help.

On an L-head, you have to remove the valve and grind the necessary amount off the stem to obtain the correct clearance. Remove the valve covers, measure the valve clearance with the cylinder at TDC. If the clearances are too small, remove the valve spring retainer and pull the valve out. Very carefully, remove the amount necessary to obtain the correct clearance from the valve stem. Make sure you remove the metal slowly and evenly so the valve stem remains square with the lifter surface. It is easy to remove too much, so be careful.
