Outside compressor fan motor stops turning. Replaced fan motor and it came with a new cap (small silver box) it ran for about 1hour than it shut off again found that it was drawing 2.5 amps the motor says it should only draw 1.5 amps. Could this be the problem of it running hot? If so what could cause this to a new motor? Did not change the original cap none of the new wires from the fan motor go to it though. HELP!!:wall::wall:

You need to give folks time..it is a Sunday.

No pro..but some wires should go to the cap. Did you make a drawing of what it looked like before you replaced the motor?

Also, brand, model number of the unit will help the Pro's. Do you have a multimeter and know how to use it. Pics are always helpful as well. You need to post to a photo hosting site then copy the HTML code into your post.

What is the rpm / horsepower of the old motor and the new motor.

The old motor is 850 rpm and the new (which they told me was a dirrect replacement) is 1075 rpm. The new motor has 5 wires instead of 3 like the old. It has 2 brown one has a white strip and they both go to the new cap. and the other 2 wires one black went to the contactor and the other yellow I was told with the new cap that it also went to the switch. The new motor is a GE model m599 S Stock # 3728 HP 1/4, V 208-230 A1.8 RPM 1075.

there's your problem- how can a 1075 rpm motor be a direct replacement for an 850 rpm motor? Duh! There is a cubed relationship between the fan speed and the horsepower requirement and that's why the new motor is overloaded. As for the wiring, there's a label right on the motor to tell you how to wire it. When you purchase the correct motor, check to see what cap it uses. That information will also be on the label. Let us know how you make out.
