Hey all, greetings from chicago

I have a whirlpool window unit 8 years old

This year it has stopped working properly

note: the fan runs continuously

I thought it was the thermostat because the compressor would cycle on and off; about 10 minutes on -- 53 degree air -- and then 10 minutes off --- 68 degree air---

I bypassed the thermostat and it still does the same thing
cold warm cold warm etc...

I don't know much about air conditioners, but it used to cool this room very well and doesn't anymore. Any ideas?

Does it seem like you hear an audible click noise when the compressor goes off? If yes, you might be hearing the compressor overload clicking. Things that could cause the compressor overload to click:

1. bad capacitor
2. dirty condensor coil
3. marginal compressor

Thanks Daddyjohn,

I'll probably buy a new one
