How can I replace the brick chimney stack with a wooden surround and steel pipe? Over the last 10 years, even small earthquakes have either cracked or toppled thousands of brick chimneys near the San Francisco Bay Area. My fireplace is in the middle of the house. I want to remove the bricks down to the first floor ceiling. I need a way to attach a steel pipe to the top of the bricks. I also need to attach a wooden surround to the bricks. In an earthquake, the fireplace doesn't oscillate at the same frequency as the wood frame. Now I don't want any solutions that are easy or uncomplicated.
