I have an old chain link fence with good posts ~4ft tall. I want to put a dogear or shadow box fence in its place.

The pole spacing is approximatly ~8ft apart. They appear to be very sturdy.

My idea is to attach a vertical ~6ft facia board to the metal poles with some type of U type clamp (like a muffler clamp) and then attach the fence to the facia.

Is there kits or how to's showing how others have done this?
Is this a good idea? I guess I am just tryingn to get away from digging out the old and puting in new posts.

I kinda thought if I could find 4x4's with the proper hole all the way through I could slip them over the existing posts, but i jest there.

Anybody done this before?

A neighbor just used used Ubolts to fasten treated 2X4 vertical to the line posts then ran 2X4 rails horizontal.for the boards. It worked fine. Also consider pipe straps or two legged EMT straps. Diameter of EMT and pipe is different so between the two one may be just right.

Over in the joist hanger section of Big Box you can find clamps made specifically for holding horizontal rails to fence posts. I mentioned the vertical 2X4s though because it sounds like you want a fence higher then 4 feet.

Of course you might want to put an occasional full height 4X4 line post to reinforce your typical chain link line post in case of high winds but the neighbor didn't and of course the 2X4s strengthen the posts.

Seems like I may be able to easily to this. yippee.
