I have an older fridge in my cabin that stays off most of the year. When I get there and turn the power on, it runs fine but even after 2 days the freezer just gets cold and the fridge barley gets cool on the coldest settings.Anything I can check or do or should I toss it?

If it has been off(til you turn it on), then you can rule out that the coils are frozen over. If all the fans and compressor are running, and the heat coils are clean and the gaskets are good and sealing the compartments and the light bulb is off when the door is almost closed - then you can pretty much bet on a bad compressor with a mechanical(not electrical, since it is running) malfunction or refrigerant leak(most likely).

You are not allowed to do that kind of work unless EPA certified and you could have to pay a fine that could bankrupt you and go to jail. Moderators have stated on this board that no such advice can be given. Sorry.

yes

Even if you have a certification to work on automotive a/c, it doesn't cover fridges or residential a/c. The kit you have for your car won't work. Next time you run the fridge, look at the evaporator coil after it's been on for several hours. If there's a little frost at the beginning of the coil but the rest of it is just cool, you have either a restriction or refrigerant shortage. If there is no frost but the coil is cool and sweaty, you have a bad compressor.
