Well I'm running two AC's in my studio apartment now. A 12,000 btu window unit and an 11,000 btu portable one, both new units. The portable unit helped. When I came home my ac's were off and the place was about 95. With both of them cranking I got it down into the 70's in maybe a little over an hour. Then I turned the portable one off. Now I realize how important insulation is in a home. Think about it, the less insulation there is, the more it's like running the ac outdoors. You'll feel it right in front of you and that's it. If I shut the door to the bathroom with the rest of the house cool, 10 minutes later the bathroom is an oven! Why is that? It's nighttime, the sun is down.

You got the air temp down but all of your stuff and the home still has the latent heat. This will continue to let of heat until it cools. You will also have the radiant heat from walls and the roof.

For alot of people, that release of heat takes most of the night, so the AC has to keep running.
I advocate building houses so the house isn't such a HEAT SINK, minimize concrete, rock, and log homes. They take a long time to release the absorbed heat. Regular lumber, shingles, breathable attic is about the best you can do, short of large shade trees, solar orientation, etc
