I was trying to install a ceiling fan, but found out the fan was too heavy so am trying to put the old light fitting back up. i have changed fittings quite successfully before but this time, there are two many wires and i don't know where they go! (i didn't take it down so i don't know where they went originally) there is the earth (which obviously has its own place), but then there are 3 neutral wires and 3 live ones. the box has the following connctions;
N,N,N,loop,loop,loop,L,L
obvioulsy the wires from the light go into the end ones. i have tried many combinations now, and i just can't get it to work. its either on all the time, off all the time, fusing all the lights or flashing. what am i missing?!

Thanks

Now i have identified it as a loop-in system with 3 feeds. i've set it up as per the diagrams and think i've identified the switch live (witht the other 2 neutrals in that place, the light is just on all the time). however, now, with everything in what should be the right place, the circuit is overloading and tripping the breaker everytime you turn the light on! WHAT AM I DOING WRONG????!!!!!

There will be only one neutral and one hot. Unless there is more then one breaker involved there is only one power source not three as you state. With all wires separated determine using an analog multimeter or test light which cable is hot. Using the ohm scale on the multimeter determine which cable show continuity with the switch on and infinity with the switch off.

Black to the hot cable, black of the cable to another circuit, and the white of the switch cable (which should be painted red) are wire-nutted together.

Light white, hot cable white, wire to other fixture cable wire-nutted together.

Remaining black to fixture black.

Grounds together and pigtailed to box if box metal.

I am assuming three two conductor cables into box.

The Hot cable
The switch loop cable
The cable to another unswitched fixture.
If next fixture is also controlled by this switch then parallel that cable to the light instead or post back

Ray .,

This OP is from UK it will have diffrent colour format than in North America set up.

Madeline.,

For your colour if you have older twinner 2.5's the colour will be red { live } and black { netrual } and current colour code is brown { live } and Bleu { netural }
IIRC the yellow is used for switched run or switch loop

Is this circuit is on the ring or radial circuit setup ?

If not sure just look at the RCD distubation panel and look at the breaker rating I know rings useally at 30 or 32 amp breaker while raidal is useally on 16 amp breaker .

If you are on radial circuit this is very impoart watch out when you use the netrual espcally if you have two circuits in there if that the case you may actainally swap the netural that can get the breaker tripped or overheat the conductors.

Let us know what you see at the luminaire rose spot.

Merci,Marc

Ray ., This OP is from UK it will have diffrent colour format than in North America set up. Very sorry about the mistake. Because of the way the boards displays on my screen I don't see the location without side scrolling. I keep forgetting to do that. Again sorry. Please delete my answer.

Thanks everyone. i managed to get all the wires set up in the right order thanks to your advice, but then it still didn't work! but never fear, i discovered that all my experimenting had blown the switch so i've changed that and now it all works.
Thanks again:D
