I've never used a die to cut threads before and I don't have any cutting oil. I'm cutting threads in steel and I used honing oil but the cutting doesn't seem to be very smooth.
Is honing oil not a good substitute for cutting oil?

I should think honing oil would be too thin to work well in that situation. But it won't affect the cut itself. It will, if too thin, cause the cutting action to slow down due to more friction. Is it smoking when you crank it up and run it a little?

Chandler's right. Invest in a can of cutting oil, it's cheap. But don't expect this to speed up or smooth out the process greatly. Go slow. Are you reversing every half revolution to break off the chips?
