Hi! I'm attempting to make curtains with a blackout liner for my son's room but I am not sure what type of curtain top would be best as they will be very heavy. The window is 82in wide and 48in long. I was thinking about making tie backs but I think the window might be to wide. I thought about tab tops but I'm afraid they wouldn't support the weight. Is there a certain type of rod that would work better?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum! The heading can be anything you like. Did you want to open and close them or just leave them stationary? If you prefer to open and close, then you'll want to hang them from rings. The rod could be traverse or the rings can be slid manually on a decorative rod. In this case, some kind of pleats are best (and necessary for traverse rods) but you can make a flat panel for manual opening.
Tab tops can be used for heavy panels since they're sewn in, but do not slide well, so they're best for stationary. Rodpockets can be used too, but like the tab tops, they won't slide well. You can use wide tiebacks for tab tops or rodpockets, but there won't be as much light in the room (if that matters) and personally, I don't care for the look of tiebacks on a wide window, but if you do, it's perfectly fine.
If you're not using a valance, you want a decorative rod (metal or wood) with finials. Try not to get too cheap and chinsy of a rod, if possible.

Hi you will need A 3 inch rings that go right through the curtain. I think you need some sort of tool that you have to use to attach the rings, the rings come in two parts one for the back and one for the front, you use the tool and it joins both rings right through the curtain, its just like putting on poppers. then you put a steel bar through the rings.

If you plan on just using tie backs and not sliding the draperies open, you can go the [I]most[I]inexpensive way and mount the panels to a board (you can often hide the staples in the pleats). There is no issue with the weight this way and you've saved yourself the cost of a rod and rings:rolleyes:
